What is a MAA?
Normally called the Master at Arms although some people call it Mistress at Arms

What does a MAA do?
the main job of a MAA is to make sure that the amount of Dragoons does not get very high and to kept them from taking over the ship

MAA also takes the XO duties of moving people around planking and everything else so the naver can just worry about naving.

What do you say as a MAA

At the start of the SMH you want to make sure that everyone knows who is the Naver and you are the MAA and questions go to you.

You want to make sure people stay in position and do what you want.

Accept 1v1
and all but gunners volunteer to defend

When you enter you main job becomes killing dragoons. When someone loses a 1v1 you gain a dragoon ready to fight you. You want to make sure you do not lose the fight as a MAA so normally you fight 2v1. On a WB you have 6 people without jobs you take those 6 and normally fight when you get 2-3 dragoons

or you select 3 to kill 1 dragoon or like 5 to take out 2

If ye are the MAA ask the naver main ways to figure it out.
1 Does the naver plan to move away?
2 Is there a lot of damage or water
3 is they enemy ships around (much more then 1 and ye should not be hauling
normally if no enemy ships are around ye can call for haul if ye have damage say all haul but carp or all haul but bilge ect

You should be on Team Speak or some chat thing with your naver so you can good communication.

I’ve been the designated MAA on both Atlantis and Haunted Seas cruises. The first couple times were when Atlantis was new to the game and we were all still learning by trial and error. In order to do as good a job as I could, I read as much information about MAAing as I could. I’m by far not the best MAA, but here are some tips.

Since the MAA is also the XO, it would be a good idea to get some XO experience if you haven’t already. You can read the XO information in our forum for some tips. Navers should try to appoint an officer from their crew as MAA so they’ll have the ability to plank and order mates to stations.

The naver has to appoint the MAA in order for the MAA to have the proper interface (explained below) to perform his/her duties.

Ships are usually staffed with as much crew as the ship will hold. This will mean that there could be more mates than duty stations. These extra mates will be your primary defense team so try to pick some of the better sword fighters. It might be a good idea to write down their names so you don’t forget who they are. A great stat isn’t entirely necessary, but it should be better than proficient or able. Dragoons and ghosts are best defeated by dropping combos on them and experienced sword fighters are better at this.

The gunning stations should be filled so help the naver look for the best gunners and give them gunning orders if needed.

When the ship reaches the monster hunt, begin reminding everyone to volunteer to defend. Remind them occasionally since their volunteer status will change sometimes. You’ll want as many defenders as you can get, even if you have designated defenders. Also remind everyone to accept challenges. Gunners usually shouldn’t volunteer or accept challenges. Tell everyone that treasure hauling without permission and leaving an unfinished fray before you’re knocked out are grounds for planking. Don’t be shy about this and plank if necessary to maintain discipline. It’s not usually necessary, however. It’s desirable for mates to leave a fray when they’re knocked out to take a duty station.

Try to keep an eye on stations that are empty because someone’s fighting a challenge. Try to have someone that doesn’t have a station take the empty ones. Do the same for frays.

The MAA will have an extra interface that shows a list, sorted by duty station, of mates that have volunteered to defend with a check box next to each name. Check the box for your designated defenders but not the others until you need them. Check the list often since it changes from time to time depending on challanges. You’ll also be able to see how many “battle ready” boarders there are. Those are the boarders that have defeated one of your crew in the challenge.

The MAA interface also includes a button to begin a fray against all the battle ready boarders on the ship. Try to begin the fray when there are no more than half as many boarders as you have designated defenders. If there are too many battle ready boarders, check the box next to someone that’s at a station that isn’t critical at that time (if bilge is down use a bilger). The maximum number of boarders you should have at one time is 4 to 6 depending on the size of the ship you're on. This will mean that you'll have to have 8 to 12 defenders fighting in the fray.

You have the option to use yourself as a designated defender. If you can avoid it, don’t. You’ll want to be able to see what’s going on aboard the ship and react as necessary. Sometimes, by the time the fray is over, there will be enough battle ready boarders to begin another fray. You, also, might want to direct un-stationed mates to empty stations. The naver will want you to make sure no one treasure hauls unless it’s a good time. Treasure haul yourself only if things are going well. You can check on the progress of the fray by clicking on one of the defenders and viewing the contest.
