Gari’s Rocks

There have been questions about “Gari’s Rocks”. Some newer mates are missing out on this bit o’ crew lore. I’m here to set the record straight so ye all know the story, ‘cause I were there.

Ye all know that Gari is the oldest pirate in the crew. When Gari were a guppy there was no fire and meat was eaten raw. He developed his arrrsome runnin’ style by stayin’ ahead o’ the saber tooth cats.

One day, at a meetin’, Lailin was givin’ instructions and Gari was takin’ notes (he’s a conscientious pirate). He finally said, “Slow down. It ain’t easy to chisel me notes into this rock.” If Gari’s a little slow answerin’ a question, ye’ll understand why. He has a good filin’ system, but it ain’t easy to flip through those files. He’ll get yer answer eventually.

Poor Gari has a hard time when the cap’n changes ‘er mind (like women do a lot). If ye think it’s hard to chisel notes on rocks, ye should try to erase ‘em.

The crew found out that Gari has notes spread all over Midnight, and most of the rocks you see on battle boards are notes Gari left for the next time he happens by. If ye look close ye’ll see things like, how many mediums it takes to max a merchant brig or which way whirlys turn. Some notes are cryptic and hard to figure. Like “RLRshoot34.”

If ye sail close to the rocks ye can get some really good pointers. Just be careful not to bump ‘em. That sometimes chips of pieces and they gets hard to read.

Once I arrrrsked Gari why he don’t switch to paper and a pencil. He said he got use to chisel’s and rocks ‘cause they lasts longer, and he doesn’t like to use new fangled, high tech stuff.

If Gari moves a little slow remember; he might have a shoppin’ list in his pocket.

Woot Gog

Sometimes ye’ll still see some o’ the older mates use the cheer “Woot Gog”. What does it mean? Why do they say it?

A while back, the crew’s lieutenant, Yesimapirate, was particularly happy about a melee win. She wanted to express ‘er joy by shoutin’, “Woot Good Game.” I’m sure ye know that if ye types “gg” it’ll come out “good game.” That’s what Yesi were tryin’ to do. Unfortunately fer Yesi, she got an extra “o” in tharrrr and it came out, “Woot Gog.” Some o’ the mates picked up the cheer and fer a while it were the official crew cheer.

Wanted to share the Sing Haaaaa! n the Lore behind that cheer!

As some of ya may know, (and I love this thread cuz some of ya may not know... the whys n wharrr-fores on why we do or say the things we do)... Gari n Ditz n I have formed a piratical bond of sorts and met up fer random weekends of RL fun times too...

On one occasion, they introduced me to a fine Thai restaurant near tharrr Villa n we shared a Grog what be named Singha!

Now ya prolly also know I love a challenge; an they may have mentioned that ya can only get it in a Thai establishment, so I scoured the Inns n Breweries until I found some what could be special pre-ordered n had it delivered to them... which then promped the cheer Sing Haaaaa!!!

A cheer what reminds me of good times with good friends when e're tis hollered in jubilance!! ;D

What’s all this talk about “Gari’s rum” the cap’n is always yellin’ about.

Well… I gets tired after a loooong pillage. When I’m restockin’ the ship and thankin’ the jobbers and crew and talking to hearties and crew mates, I sometimes loose track o’ what I’m doin’. I most always restock the rum first then move on to the cannon balls. The problem is… I don’t always remember to hi-lite the line fer the iron monger I want to buy from and leave the distillery selected. I enters the quantity of cb’s I want (and that could be 100 or more) and click “Buy”. Remember that I already restocked the rum.

Wooops!! Now I gots 300+ units o’ rum on the Black Ling. If I sell it back I’m gonna loose poe. If I leave it, the next mate to take the ship out won’t have to restock rum. Maybe not even the next 6 mates.

O’ course the cap’n would see all that rum and check the vessel records and see it were me what did it.

I never do this any more, but the cap’n never forgets.

A Brief History of Midnight Serenade

Midnight Serenade was founded by Lailin on April 14 in the year 2007. Lailin had misgivings about the crew she was in, Maroon Marauders, so she decided to form a new crew. She wanted her crew to be one of mutual respect and support. The crew was to be based on training for new players and potential officers. In-game growth was important.

Within a week Lailin recruited Garibaldi, the alt of one of her hearties and very shortly after that Ditzeeblonde, another hearty’s alt, was also recruited with the idea of helping Lailin to grow her new crew.

Garibaldi later became the first officer in Midnight Serenade and eventually accepted the position of First Mate, while Ditzeeblonde became Lady of the flag Fairwinds which Midnight Serenade was a part of.

A very inexperienced Goatbeard was recruited into the crew and rose through the ranks to become a Senior Officer.

Another hearty to most everyone in the crew was sailing with Midnight Serenade so often and liking the experience so much that she created an alt to join the crew. Yesimapirate was born and soon rose to the position of Lieutenant.

Midnight Serenade became the most active crew in Fairwinds and began its climb on the crew fame list. The crew quickly reached the top ten crews on the ocean and by the time it was a year and a half old Midnight Serenade had reached number one and was instrumental in maintaining Fairwind’s position as a top flag. The crew has been in the top ten ever since.

Relations with Fairwinds became strained and there began to be rumblings among Serenaders about our continued involvement with the flag. In June of ’09 Lailin met with her First Mate and Lieutenant to discuss the crew’s flag membership. The discussion was moving toward leaving the flag so the other Senior Officers that were on line were asked to the meeting. The officers came up with several good reasons to take Midnight Serenade independent but could find no reasons to remain affiliated with Fairwinds. The decision was made to leave Fairwinds and in July ’09 Midnight Serenade became an independent crew.

During it’s independent period, Midnight Serenade was invited to join most of the prominent flags on the ocean but with the thought that flag membership could open the crew to drama, Midnight Serenade remained independent for some time. However, the possibility of joining a flag was never really out of the question. After some prominent crew members began asking questions about flag structure and membership, the crew began serious discussions about joining a flag or forming a new flag. With the idea that a flag affiliation would not only promote the game growth of individual crew mates but the crew as a whole and on July 12, 1010 the flag of Midnight Yacht Club was formed. Within a week the flag was on the flag fame list.

Growing the Midnight Yacht Club and forming alliances haven't been important to the monarch or royalty. The thought was that these could contribute to drama, which the crew and flag perfer to avoid at all costs. Crews formed by former crew mates. however, are automatically considered for membership in the flag.

In January of 2012 we were informed that the owners of Hephaestus' Forge were tired of owning an island and would likely not defend if it were attacked. Midnight Yacht Club, with the help of long time hearty Squiddy, mounted an attack and won the island unopposed.

About a year later the island was attacked by Gretchen Goldfang and successfully defended. All her ships were sunk by the end of the first round.

Real life business pressures began to take Lailin away from the game more and more. She asked Gari if he wanted to take over the crew and become captain. First he said, "No" but then he found out that many game mechanics that only captains can take care of weren't available. He finally told Lailin he'd be the captain. If Lailin ever decides she wants the captaincy back she'll get it immediately.

Aye. That I did. Here be the story on that one.

I grew in Maine and we lived in a town that was lucky enough to get a dot on the road map and an interstate exit. The house was at the end of a dirt driveway which had once been an actual street and we had gobs and gobs of yard. So when I was very little, we had fowl. Ducks sometimes and some white geese as well that we kept for the eggs.

The white geese were holy terrors and since I was approximately the same size they were they would often try to chase after me with hopes of attacking me. So my mom would grab a Wiffleball bat and chase them away. This was the beginning of my conviction that geese are "demons with feathers" as I would dub them in adulthood and my paranoia of them.

The beating up part comes in about four months ago. I'm at work just chilling and minding my own business on the morning break. One of the common things folks do on break at my building is walk around the perimeter of the building. And at the back there is this drainage area where we have turtles and ducks. And yes geese. So I'm at the back of the building getting close to circling back around to the front when a goose honks very loudly and it seems to be directly over my head.

The goose was probably at a safe distance over my head but that doesn't matter. I FREAK OUT! So much so that I start running the opposite direction in a dead sprint. Unfortunately because I am so panicked, I have no control of my upper body. I pitch forward and fall to the sidewalk. Scraping up my right arm something fierce in the process. The patch of skin that had peeled went up most the forearm and was taped and gauzed for a good two or three weeks before it all healed up. So ever since then, Gari's been referring to the incident as the goose beating me up.

ROFL - sorry I do not want to be mean and laugh. But when you first told us, I felt bad fer ye. Now I am reading it and it just made me laugh as I envision this happening like a Jerry Lewis flick. How be yer arm now?

Completely healed up. You'd never know anything had happened. And it's okay to laugh. This far removed from the incident, I do too.

I think ye came off sounding better in my version of the story. In my version ye didn't run ye just dodged and the goose panicked. I'm sure if ye think about it ye can put a better spin on it.

Here's the problem with that, Gari. There's no need to embellish the story or put a better spin on it. The subject is right here and can give the straight scoop. Quite frankly I deserve to sound foolish. Because I acted foolishly and panicked needlessly.

There's a cable show here called Ninja Warrior. It's a Japanese show with a Japanese play-by-play announcer and English subtitles. In this show, contestants run very difficult, grueling obstacle courses. As near as I can tell, if they complete 4 progressively harder courses they win... nothing. Only bragging rights.

One of the words I keep hearing from the play-by-play announcer sounds to me like, "Sadoda" (pronounced sa'doo'da). I think it means something like he or she made it (past the obstacle) or maybe "success". Whatever it means, I thought it sounded good for a victory yell.
